Dunn, Pittman, Skinner & Cushman traces its beginnings to September 1952 when Raymond E. Dunn, Sr. “hung a shingle” outside a one-room office in downtown New Bern. A native of Pamlico County, Ray, Sr. grew up on a farm and hitchhiked to Mars Hill College in the North Carolina mountains to enroll as a freshman.  At the end of his first year, Ray, Sr. enlisted in the Army Air Corp and served as a B-29 Pilot in World War II. After the war, he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with an undergraduate degree in business administration and then received a law degree from UNC School of Law.

   

From that small beginning in 1952, Ray, Sr. practiced law in Eastern North Carolina for fifty years.  The cornerstone of the practice he built was the principle that every individual was entitled to zealous representation under the law.  As a practicing attorney, he viewed his responsibility as an advocate who worked tirelessly to apply the rule of law and to protect, enforce, and defend the rights and responsibilities of individuals and businesses in our community.  Ray, Sr.’s unwavering principles continue to guide Dunn Pittman today.  

 

Until his death in 2001, Ray, Sr. mentored his son, Ray Dunn, Jr., Pat Leigh Pittman, and many of the firm’s strong, competent, and committed staff. An attorney and CPA who had practiced in the Triangle area of the state for 20 years, Mary Skinner moved with her family to Pamlico County in 2004 and joined the firm in 2005. With strong family roots in the New Bern community, Charles Cushman joined the firm in 2007 and is fast proving that the new generation is as strong as the original. Rudy Ashton joined the firm in 2016, bringing decades of experience and his tireless work ethic to the group. These five attorneys and the entire staff of Dunn Pittman work to continue the tradition of providing quality legal services to the individuals and businesses of eastern North Carolina
